#BlogElul 24: Giving
I had planned to write this post about tzedakah, the Jewish value of giving charity.
But then I read a quote this week that said "Forgiving is for giving - it is a gift you give to yourself."
And I started to think about that. We spend so much time during our High Holy Day preparation looking inward and accounting our own sins and deeds. And we are required to make amends and say that we are sorry for the things we have done badly in the past year. But I think that we spend less time on how to actually grant that forgiveness. Now, I realize that tomorrow's topic is forgiveness, but bear with me.
Is forgiveness actually a gift that we give to ourselves? Is it really more true that the one granting the forgiveness gains much more than the one who is begging it?
Forgiveness is, perhaps, the ultimate in giving - it is a gift to ourselves. We are giving ourselves the opportunity to live free of a grudge. We are giving ourselves the gift of a clean slate. We are giving ourselves the gift of letting go of the past, and the gift of creating a new and different future, one in which we have control over our own ability to let others define who we are and how we behave.
When assigning the themes of teshuvah and tzedakah, repentance and holy giving, to the High Holy Days, perhaps our wise ancestors were actually teaching us something about the nature of forgiveness - that in fact, the very act of granting forgiveness is the holiest act of giving...to ourselves.
The Jewish month of Elul, which precedes the High Holy Days, is traditionally a time of renewal and reflection. It offers a chance for spiritual preparation for the Days of Awe. It is traditional to begin one’s preparation for the High Holy Days during this month with the Selichot, the prayers of forgiveness. We look to begin the year with a clean slate, starting anew, refreshed. All month, along with others, I'll be blogging a thought or two for each day to help with the month of preparation... I will be blogging here, and sharing #Elulgram photos on the same themes at imabima.tumblr.com. Follow me on twitter @imabima for all the #BlogElul posts, not only mine but others' as well!

Monday Matters: Donors Choose
Monday Matters is a new series at Ima on and off the Bima. I'm featuring some favorite charitable organizations on Mondays.
I think Donors Choose is a really cool way to spend your tzedakah money.
The teachers post the projects that they hope to get funded, and the donors decide where and how to spend their money.
Here, for example, is a project in my own backyard, in my own county.
Here's another one.
Don't take my word for it...here are some famous people talking about DonorsChoose.
One lucky commenter on today's post will get a code for $25 to spend on DonorsChoose...any way you want!
Leave me a comment telling me about a teacher or classroom experience that inspired you...
I'll choose the winner on Thursday, in honor of Thanksgiving!

Monday Matters: Birthday Angels
This is a new series I'm starting here at Ima on and off the
Bima.
Monday Matters will feature various causes and charitable organizations that I think are important. I don't have any affiliation with these organizations. For every 10 comments on this post, I'll donate ONE WHOLE BIRTHDAY PARTY through Birthday Angels! (But whoever commented one word per comment to increase the numbers...sorry, I'll honor it last week but not this week...nice try!!!! very creative!!!!)
November is birthday month in my house. If you're a regular follower of this blog, you'll know that since it seems to be all that I talk about this month!
I am so grateful that when members of my family have birthdays, we have cake, parties, gifts, special dinners...we don't go over the top by any means but we have the blessing of celebrating our years.
There are so many families and children that don't have that luxury.
In fact, according to Birthday Angels, one in three Israeli children can't afford birthday parties. Wow.
Here's what they do:
Isn't this a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday?
What's your favorite way to celebrate your birthday?
For every 10 comments on this post, I'll donate ONE WHOLE BIRTHDAY PARTY! ($36)
(But whoever commented one word per comment to increase the numbers...sorry, I'll honor it last week but not this week...nice try!!!! very creative!!!!)
A few years ago, when my birthday coincided with Chanukah, I wrote about Birthday Angels too!

Monday Matters: Mazon
This is a new series I'm starting here at Ima on and off the Bima.
Monday Matters will feature various causes and charitable organizations that I think are important. I don't have any affiliation with these organizations. For every comment on today's post, I'll give $1 to today's organization, Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger.
I am incredibly blessed.
I never have to make a choice between feeding my children and paying for electricity.
I never have to worry that my children are getting enough food.
I never have to worry that my children have enough nutrititive food.
In fact, my children have the freedom to be picky.
They have the freedom to bake cookies, and to have birthday cakes.
There is milk in the refrigerator, and vegetables in the crisper.
There are millions of people in America who don't have enough to eat.
The new term is "food insecure" and I can only imagine how scary it must be to worry and wonder where the next meal is, if the meal will have enough nutrition, if children are getting enough.
"In this world of abundance, there is no excuse for hunger."
Mazon means "food" in Hebrew. They are the national Jewish organization dedicated to the cause of hunger, through advocacy and education, partnership grants and strategic initiatives. There is a dual focus on the immediate need to provide food and the long-term need to find solutions to the greater problem of hunger in our country.
You can donate here, online. Why not send a donation today?
For every comment on this post, I'll give $1 to Mazon.

For everything there is a season....
For everything there is a season,
and a time for every purpose under heaven.
(Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Yes, today is the first day of school.
Sending off my (gulp) third-grader for the fourth time to his first day of school.
(to see the other pics in this series check out this post here.)
Wow.
And what a blessing, to have a wonderful school to send him to.
To know that there will be pencils and pens, markers and paper.
To have the funds to buy school supplies.
To have the luxury of buying him a new lunchbox.
To have the comfort of knowing that his teeth was checked by a dentist, his health was checked by a doctor, and when he outgrows his shoes, there will be new ones to fit his growing feet.
I am so incredibly blessed.
In honor of the first day of school, I'm giving away one $10 giving card to Donors Choose.
Because there are schools, teachers, and students that are not as blessed as I am.
Leave me a comment telling me your favorite back-to-school tradition and you'll be entered to win.
Tell a friend via Facebook or Twitter and I'll give you an extra entry.
If I hit 36 entries, I'll give out two $10 gifts.
Please help me out and leave a separate comment for each entry (comment, Twitter, Facebook).
Ends on Friday...

A Great Shabbat Mitzvah

A great way to honor Shabbat - leave a bag of groceries on your front porch for your mail carrier to pick up on Saturday. Or, even better, can you deliver bags and flyers like the Homeshuler does?
Here in the northern Chicago suburbs, I know that our local food pantry needs:
• Canned fruit
• Pasta sauce
• Rice
• Canned tuna/salmon
• Canned soups
• Cookies, crackers
• Salad dressings & oils
• Paper goods
• Laundry detergent & cleaning supplies • Diapers (Size 1, Size 4, Size 5)
You can see the whole of the New Trier Township Food Pantry Wish List here.
Here is the list from the Moraine Township Food Pantry.
Also, in this week that we celebrate our mothers,
What a fabulous way to honor your mom or any other woman in your life. It's not too late to make a gift (although it's too late, I think, for delivery of a card) that will make your mom and so many others happy.
So many ways to help others....our lives are so full and blessed.

What a fabulous way to honor your mom or any other woman in your life. I know that my mom appreciates it, and I think yours will to.

Blogs Have Power!
The nice ladies over at BlogHer are trying to show the power of blogging and other social media. Always one to help out, here I am!
From Tide's Loads of Hope Website: Tide Loads of Hope helps in the aftermath of a natural disaster by providing clean clothes and a sense of comfort to families in need. Partnering with Feeding America, we travel to disaster affected neighborhoods with the Tide Loads of Hope truck or vans, our free mobile laundry service.
Tide Loads of Hope truck:
Tide Loads of Hope Vintage Tees:
Tide Loads of Hope can also be supported through the purchase of a Tide Vintage Tee. All profits go to support families affected by disaster.
Where it all started
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the need for clean clothing became critical, and Tide found a way to help. So in November 2005, the Tide Loads of Hope truck headed to Camp Hope in the Metairie, LA area and cleaned over 10,000 loads of laundry. The spirit of this first venture informs and inspires everything Tide Loads of Hope program does.
So why am I blogging about this? You can get one of Tide's cool-looking vintage tees and support their cause.
(Hey Tide, if you're reading, I could give away a t-shirt?)
Shirts can be purchased through this link:

Overdue....Tzedakah Giveaway Winners
Over the end of Chanukah and for my birthday, I had a few giveaway posts that I still haven't resolved.
Oops, sorry! (The whole Gaza thing took over, I think.)
The first is a tree planted by Jewish National Fund in Israel in your honor.
This one goes to Gayle, and I think it's fabulous that it's her!
The second Chanukah giveaway was to to Mazon, $1 for every comment.
Just to let you all know, I will be giving $13 to Mazon in your honor.
Thanks! (I might round it up to $18 for good measure...)
I was going to give Chanukah donuts to Standing Together, which brings coffee and treats to IDF soldiers on patrol. As things have changed a little, they are doing even more work and I'm going to make a donation to them (it's just not for Chanukah anymore) in honor of Jack. I think this is pretty cool that he is the winner because he has been working so hard on his Gaza War update posts.
In honor of my birthday, I gave away 2 Birthday Angels Birthday parties (2 because you guys are awesome and I hit over 32 comments) in honor of Leah in Chicago and AngelForever!
If I'm donating in your honor, please let me know via email or TwitterDM how you'd like the "honor" to read.
Thanks for your patience, y'all.
Can't wait until the next round of giveaways....stay tuned!
P.S. This week's Haveil Havalim (#200!!!!) is over here at Jack's place.

Every so often my birthday falls during Chanukah. When it happens, I get a whole lot of birthday candles! This year, it happens to be the 8th night, so it's quite a display.

It's for a kid in Israel who can't afford a birthday party, through an organization called Birthday Angels.
Check out their video:
It's a big bang-up ending to my 2 weeks of Chanukah fun and giveaways.

Soldiers & Chanukah...a Tzedakah Giveaway
It's very clear that the story of Chanukah is a military one. Most renditions of the tale indicate the the holiday is a celebration of a military victory. It's relatively clear to me that the rabbis of the Talmud weren't super-comfortable with a holiday that celebrated military might, especially while they were living in Babylonia (and therefore subject to a foreign power), and so they reworked the story to focus on the miracle of the oil instead.
But all of this does allow me the link from the military victory of Chanukah to the present-day Israeli soldiers, many of whom serve at checkpoints, bases, and other various military installations. Standing Together is an organization that was founded to send pizza to soldiers and has expanded to sending coffee, donuts, and other treats and comforts that helps soldiers feel appreciated and cared for. More than anything, the soldiers of Israel are her children, and Standing Together helps remind us of that.
So....in honor of one wonderful and very lucky commenter, I will provide Chanukah donuts for four soldiers! Comment away on this post. How do you find comfort when you're away from home?
And, if you so desire, click over to Standing Together and make your own donation. Five bucks goes a long way, and if you're in Israel, contact them to arrange to deliver the pizza, coffee and donuts.
P.S. The awesome Leora has posted a great edition of Kosher Cooking Carnival. Go check it out!

Baked, Not Fried....and a Mazon Giveaway
For those of you not familiar with this truly incredible food, soufganiyot are jelly-donuts, deep fried and usually doused in powdered sugar. What could be bad about such a delicacy? And not only a delicacy, but a mitzvah! In Israel, where potatoes are not really native, these jelly-filled-fried-dough-balls are the delightful alternative for latkes (levivot), a food fried in oil. And, since oil is really the heart of the Chanukah matter, oily foods rule the day.
This month's issue of Cooking Light had this recipe for Baked Soufganiyot.
Baked!? How can you bake something that's meant to be fried? I have no idea. But they sure were yummy.
Yield 8 servings (serving size: 2 rolls)
Ingredients
2. Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray, turning to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 1 hour or until doubled in size. (Gently press two fingers into dough. If indentation remains, dough has risen enough.) Punch dough down; cover and let rest 5 minutes. Divide dough into 16 portions, rolling each portion into a ball.
3. Place dough balls on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise 45 minutes or until dough is doubled in size.
4. Preheat oven to 375°.
5. Uncover balls. Bake at 375° for 14 minutes or until browned. Remove from pan; cool completely on a wire rack.
6. Make a pocket in each roll using the handle of a wooden spoon, pushing to but not through the opposite end. Fill with about 2 teaspoons jam, using plastic condiment bottle or a piping bag. Sprinkle rolls with powdered sugar. (Don't sprinkle until you're ready to eat, though, or the sugar seems to disappear and you have to do it again. Not that I know.)
I did not use jam. My oldest child doesn't like fruit-filled sweets (I'm not the hugest fan either) and since I've had soufganiyot filled with chocolate, I know it can be done. I used chocolate pudding. Delish!!! Plus I served up some extra chocolate pudding on the side to dip the extra dough (each donut had a little more dough than filling) into.
A truly delightful, if time-consuming, new holiday tradition for our family!
Mazon, which means "food" in Hebrew, is an organization working to stop hunger in the world. They do so by particularly linking simchas, celebrations, with helping the hungry. This connection is not new in Jewish life, but Mazon has worked very hard to institutionalize the concept of giving 3% of the cost of life-cycle and other celebratory events to Mazon to help those in need.
In honor of the food of Chanukah, I will donate $1 for every comment on this post to Mazon!
Happy Chanukah!
P.S. Thanks to my colleage Rabbi Paul Kipnes for pointing out this post on the NY Times Well Blog: ReThinking the Latke....interesting roundup of the healthification (a word?) of Chanukah food
This month's issue of Cooking Light had this recipe for Baked Soufganiyot.
Baked!? How can you bake something that's meant to be fried? I have no idea. But they sure were yummy.
Yield 8 servings (serving size: 2 rolls)
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm 1% low-fat milk, divided
- 6 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon grated orange rind
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 large egg
- 14.5 ounces all-purpose flour, divided (about 3 1/4 cups)
- Cooking spray
- 3/4 cup strawberry jam
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
Preparation
1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm milk in a large bowl; let stand 5 minutes or until foamy. Add remaining 1/4 cup warm milk, granulated sugar, and next 5 ingredients (through egg); beat with a mixer at medium speed until blended (butter will not be completed melted). Weigh or lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Add 9 ounces (about 2 cups) flour to yeast mixture; beat at medium speed until smooth. Stir in 4 1/2 ounces (about 1 cup) flour to form a soft dough. Turn dough out onto a floured surface. Knead dough until smooth and elastic (about 8 minutes); add enough of remaining 1 ounce (about 1/4 cup) flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, to prevent dough from sticking to hands (dough will feel sticky).2.

Chanukah Countdown Roundup & a Tree!

The first night of Chanukah is tonight, and I wanted to thank you all for joining me on my Chanukah Countdown Party! It's been quite fun for me to give things away every day (even if it was a little stressful) and I thank you all for reading and playing along.
A huge thank you to all those who gave me things to give away. Here they are, along with the winners of each day's giveaway:
Monday, Oh Nuts, winner: @kvetchingeditor Chaviva
Tuesday, PopJudaica, winner: Reiza, @reizam
Wednesday, Modern Tribe, winner: Rebecca, aka @tzurriz
Thursday, Bruce the Hanukkah Moose, winner: TechyDad! @techydad
Friday, ShirLaLa Chanukah, winner: @valerie2350
Motzei Shabbat, Build-A-Bear, winner Leora, @leoraw
Many thanks again to all who played along!
But it's not over yet.
Chanukah is here and I've decided to continue the fun. So all week I'm going to be giving away Tzedakah, gifts of charitable contributions in honor of my commenters and readers! It will be a little different each day so come back and visit me.
Chanukah Sameach!
Today I'm giving away a tree. It's partly because trees seem to be on the brain but also because it's always been one of my favorite ways to give tzedakah. Jewish National Fund has been planting trees in Israel since 1928 and their work has broadened and continued over time. Today they engage in amazing work for the Land of Israel.
I will plant a tree in honor of one of my wonderful readers. Make a comment on this post. Say something nice about trees, about Israel, about Chanukah...whatever you want! I'll let you know sometime on Monday.
You can even choose the forest/certificate (one of the $18 ones, not the $5000 forest, sorry) - go to JNF's website and check out all their great works.
Stay tuned for more.
Happy Chanukah!

Please help - Time is Running Out
Only 29 days remain on this Donors Choose project.
Here's what Mrs. M says about her program:
As a new teacher at a junior high last year, I enthusiastically developed an after-school Book Club for Girls. This new extracurricular activity was a smashing success, particularly with bilingual and socially-challenged girls who may not have otherwise joined an after-school club. A group of approximately fifteen girls met weekly to discuss book and life related issues of friendship, diversity, peer pressure and determination. This group of girls, representing a plethora of races, languages, religions and ages, put aside their differences as they bonded over great literature.
This project only needs $312 more. If each of my wonderful subscribers (I know there are a bunch of you!) clicked over to the left <---- where the Donors Choose widget is, or clicked on that link above, and gave just a few dollars of your tzedakah money....we will fund this great project, helping girls gain so much from reading. I know there are a lot of causes out there in the world, but I'm hoping you'll help me and these students out here today.
It is customary to give tzedakah (charity) before Shabbat begins. So click over today....you certainly won't regret it and it will help out.
Thanks so much and Shabbat Shalom!

Gifts of Tzedakah
There are so many times during the holidays and during the year when we have to buy some kind of gift for someone who "has it all"...or it's a "gift of obligation" like a hostess gift or business-associate gift...and often the gifts that we come up with are not very useful, not very exciting, or just not what the person wants.
So this year, why not give the gift of tzedakah -- the gift of charity? I know what you're thinking, who do I give to, how do I choose, and how do I make sure that the recipient isn't offended by my choice of charitable organization? Be creative about it! Just think a little bit about the person, and figure out a charitable organization that "fits" with them.
Here are some of my favorite ideas, which I'm sure will get you thinking about more...
For the guys....if he likes...
…fishing...donate in his honor to Seashare, Fish for America’s Hungry People, an organization that donates fish to the hungry
…cars…donate in his honor to The Dare to Dream Camp, a racecar-theme camp that provides enrichment, recreation, and mentoring for underprivileged, at-risk, neglected and abused children.
…ties, donate in his honor to Shop Well With You, an organization that provides people undergoing cancer treatments with resources and advice on how they can dress and feel both comfortable and attractive.
…computers, donate in his honor to Computers for Communities, which refurbishes old computers and makes them available to needy families and communities.
…music, donate in his honor to SongWriting Works, who promote healing through song.
For the ladies...if she likes...
...candy donate in her honor to A Package From Home which provides candies and treats to Israeli soldiers away from home.
...fruit donate in her honor to Table to Table, an organization that delivers 4000-5000 meals weekly in Israel. The organization gleans fruit from trees to give to those in need.
OR donate in her honor to The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, which aims to plant 18 billion fruit trees across the world to benefit our environment and humankind.
...dogs donate in her honor to Save a Pet, an organization that encourages pet adoptions.
OR donate in her honor to the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind.
...music donate in her honor to Songs of Love, an organization that writes and records original songs for children who are facing life-threatening or chronic illness.
...shoes donate in her honor to Shoes That Fit, an organization that provides shoes to children in need.
....shopping donate in her honor to Shop Well With You, an organization that provides people undergoing cancer treatments with resources and advice on how they can dress and feel both comfortable and attractive.
...reading donate in her honor to Dream Reading, an organization that provides books for libraries.
For a new parent or a new grandparent, donate in her honor to St. Joseph's Baby Corner in Seattle, which provides basic care for new moms and babies in that city, or find a similar organization in your own city.
For kids...
Kids love birthday parties. Here are two organizations that bring birthday parties to underprivileged children: Project Birthday in Sacramento and Birthday Angels in Israel. Perhaps there is one in your city? Or maybe this is something for you to start!
Help out sick kids. Many children's hospitals have wishlists on Amazon. Pick something out and send it off to some sick kids. Perhaps the hospital in your area has a wish list. Here is the list for Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
For kids who love skateboarding, check out Land of Plenty, which strives to spread physical activity and artistic expression through skateboarding.
Do you have a young leader on your gift list? Look at Dreams for Kids, an organization that empowers young people of all abilities through leadership acitivies.
Kids are very concerned about environmentalism. Check out Kids For A Clean Environment and make a donation in honor of the kids on your list.
There are so many different organizations out there. I love thinking about matching honorees with various different organizations. It opens my eyes to the possibilities out there for helping others, as well as makes a creative and interesting gift.
Some of these organizations will send notifications directly to your recipient. Some are smaller organizations and may not. What I often do is take a picture of my kids doing an activity that is similar to the charity donated to (example: a kid holding stuffed animals for a gift to Heifer International) and make a card on Shutterfly. I'll put information about the charity on one side of the card (usually cut and paste from their website into Shutterfly) and say: "A Donation has Been Made In Your Honor to..." Then on the other side of the card I'll put the greeting "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Birthday." This is very well-received! You could also use blank cards and do this by hand.

Books and Tzedakah - What Could Be Better?
I am so excited to have found this project that Skip to My Lou is doing. Sign me up!
From Skip To My Lou's post:
While we are encouraging our children to read this summer we can be helping poor families all over the world! Read to Feed is a reading motivation/service learning program from Heifer International. Children are inspired to read more books for pleasure, while raising money, through sponsored reading, to help end world hunger and improve the environment.
I am so in love with this idea for so many reasons.
1. I am always looking for cool ideas to encourage my son to love to read.
2. I am always looking for ways to help my kids learn about tikkun olam, our responsibility to repair the world.
3. I love Heifer International and all that they do. I think their concept is so simple and yet so amazing. I use their animals-as-gifts idea for so many things (including Father's Day....) and I'm always recommending them to Bar and Bat Mitzvah students.
4. How amazing to put these things all together into a summer project!
The Read to Feed site is not working quite yet, but you can go check out Heifer's site as well as Skip to My Lou's site and join in the reading-and-helping-others party!
(I'm actually drawing a link-blank on how I got to this project, so to the great blogger who sent me her way -- thank you! I'd also like to point out how things work out...I have been catching up on blog reading, trying desperately to think about what Wednesday's post would be...and then I found this! The blog-world works for me!)

Opportunitiy to Help...and Five Places I've Been
The Bloggers helping Jeni auction is now up and running, arranged by the amazing Bella. This is an amazing opportunity to help out Jen Ballantyne, who blogs here at The Comfy Place. She is currently in hospice but still blogging, her latest post was about how much she wants to help others. Go check out the auction by clicking here to go straight to the ebay store they have set up.
There are over 130 items in the auction, including:
* photography
* one of kind services and gifts
* gift certificates to online boutiques
* Hand Crafted items
* Yummy Bath Products
* Toys and clothing for baby and child
* Jewelry
* much more!
The auction will be up and running until Thursday, May 1st.
I think this is truly harnessing the power of the blogosphere. It's amazing that most, if not all, of the people who are participating have never met Jeni IRL (in real life). I find that to be awesome....

Five Places I've Been This Week...
Toyota 2009 Corolla...welcome to the family, Hedwig the Corolla! Stay tuned for pics;-)
Healthy Living Organic T-shirts
Hadag Nachash lyrics...my latest music obsession
Family car stickers ...I had no idea I was such a trend-setter? follower?
Flourless chocolate-walnut cookies
from my del.icio.us -- where have you been?
