July 2026 Books

Kaplan's Plot by Jason Diamond - I really liked this one, but as per usual with a dual POV book, I preferred the historical storyline to the modern one. I liked the Jewish gangster/immigrant narrative.

The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb by Emmet Hirsch - this was so good! A really compelling story about an Arab Jew and his role in the creation of the State of Israel, amongst other political realities. Historical fiction but also felt so relevant.

Porcupines by Fran Fabriczki - A mother-daughter story that spoke to generational as well as cultural divides between them. Interesting but not my favorite read.

Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan - Pretty simple romance novel and I was definitely here for it!

The Irish Goodbye by Beth Anne Fennelly - I love this genre of "micro memoirs" - they're bitesize essays that help the author process her own life and the death of her sister. Beautiful and powerful.

The Someday Garden by Ashley Poston - on the one hand, I thought this story dealt well with the death of a best friend, and on the other hand, I thought the magical element was dumb. I think I wanted this book to be more and it was not.

Ransom by Daniel Silva - One of my favorite of the most recent of his books, I thought this one was really good. And of course, I loved my yearly visit with Gabriel Allon.

Whistler by Ann Patchett - oh wow, this is one of the best books of the year for sure. What a compelling book, I couldn't put it down. Don't skip this one (and it's not a horse story!)!

Dog by Yisay Ishi Ron - A hard but compelling story about a former soldier with PTSD, and how he copes and tries to make sense of his life. Powerful and important.

Tropesick by Lauren Okie - Okay, I thought this was very good until it got a little weird at the end. It was a sweet romance with a little giggly nod to the whole genre and its regular tropes....but the wacky magical bit at the end threw me off.
