It's All About Perspective

We're driving to school...
Sam sees a nativity scene in front of a house.

Sam: What's that?
Me: Well, it's the story of Christmas...
Sam: Can you tell me the story?
Me: There's a mom and a dad and the mom is pregnant, but she doesn't have a place to have the baby.
Sam: So she had the baby in a sukkah?

Hmm. I see his point.

That reminds me of all the "Red Rabbi" stories that fly around (pun intended) this time of year.

Ha! Phyllis, that's so cute. Actually, it speaks to a larger point I always argue this time of year. It IS okay and good to expose our kids to Christmas. Just like we want our kids non-Jewish friends to know about our holidays and respect, we too should teach our kids to know about their friends' holidays. When the Jewish identity in our children is strong, we need not worry about them being "bombarded" by Christmas. I love that Sam saw a Sukkah in that story. Just shows how ingrained his love for our holidays is. :)

One of the other synagogues in town shares it's space with a church. Driving by I had noticed first their sukkah, and then that they *still* hadn't taken their sukkah down. Finally I realized that the church must be planning to use it for a nativity. So, apparently in some liberal Christian circles Mary DID have a baby in a sukkah.

Fascinating point of view he has.

That is awesome! And it reminded me of something my son said when he was little! But I'm going to write it down and wait to use it for #Hanukkah Hoopla. ;-)
